A group of about 20 children, parents, spouses and even a pet dog gathered at the River Walk trailhead in Junction City on a recent Saturday morning, laughing and chatting before taking off to run, walk and even bike along the path. Their ultimate purpose: To help veterans. The individuals are part of Team Red, White and Blue, or Team RWB, a national organization with a mission to help enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity, according to its website.
“(Veterans) need to know that the community supports them as a part of the community,” said Jason Lee, chapter captain, Fort Riley Community Program, Team RWB. “They are the most dynamic people, I think, in the entire country. And, if we can harness the community piece and get people involved in their communities, then the whole country will be better for it – not just the veterans, which is our focus – but the community themselves will be better for it when those veterans are integrated and not just another shadow.”
